Position Summary
Under general supervision, performs routine service and maintenance on the District's motor vehicles and construction machinery and may perform Auto Service Person duties as required. The Mechanic I must successfully complete all required classroom and field training, written and proficiency testing occurring during or prior to the end of a thirty (30) month training period to become eligible for consideration for advancement to the position of Mechanic II. The position is assigned to either the automotive group or the equipment group of Transportation; however, operational requirements may necessitate temporary assignment as needed.
Wage Summary
The Mechanic I will be eligible for wage increases following six (6) month periods until such time as they are at the Standard Wage (Step 4). The increases are dependent on satisfactory performance and successful completion of training and proficiencies. The entry wage of this job is $31.68 with the potential to reach wage $39.60 within two years.

Shift Differential is also available for the Mechanic I role:
$2.00 additional per hour for 2nd shift -12 noon to 7:59 PM
$3.00 additional per hour for 3rd shift – 8:00 PM to 9:59 AM
If training standards are met and satisfactory performance is maintained incumbents will move into the Mechanic II wage scale listed below. This progression results in a promotional increase from the current Mechanic I wage to at least a 5% increase or the next highest wage in the Mechanic II wage scale.

Education
•Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) plus three (3) years of experience as indicated below. or
•Required - Associate's Degree in basic automotive, diesel mechanics or heavy/agricultural equipment at an approved technical school (i.e., Iowa Western Community College, Metropolitan Community College, Southeast Community College) or equivalent. Online and high school courses in automotives or mechanics do not qualify.
Minimum Requirements
•Required - Minimum of 3 years of experience as a full-time mechanic at a car or truck dealership, machinery dealership or general vehicle or machinery repair facility; plus the High School Diploma or General Education Diploma as indicated above. or
•Required - Minimum of 1 year of experience as a full-time mechanic at a car or truck dealership, machinery dealership or general vehicle or machinery repair facility; plus the Associate's Degree as indicated above.
•Required - Experience at a specialty shop such as exhaust repair, transmission repair, brake repair or tire shop will receive only minor credit.

Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.
•Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise wide software (e.g., SAP). (Entry proficiency)
•Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.
Essential Functions
•Perform diagnostics and make repairs or adjustments on engines, transmissions, drive trains, differentials, suspensions, exhaust systems, fuel systems (diesel, gasoline, compressed natural gas, propane), brakes, tires and other mechanical components of District vehicles and equipment.
•Diagnose and repair vehicle/equipment electrical issues.
•Perform cold start-ups on District vehicles and equipment.
•Perform wheel alignments, tune-ups and assist with engine overhauls.
•Perform inspections, flushes and repairs on radiators.
•Perform repairs on starting and charging systems.
•Inspect and repair steering and hydraulic systems.
•Drive District vehicles and machinery.
•Perform metal fabrication, metal cutting, grinding, and welding (Oxy-Acetylene and Wire Feed).
•Equip new cars, trucks and other types of equipment to meet specifications prior to incorporation into fleet service.
•Repair or replace winches and cables.
•Perform the physical requirements of the position.
•Communicate with and assist internal and external customers.
•Communicate with and assist customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.
